Photovoltaic and Wind Energy Systems

The most prominent renewable energy source across the globe, and of course in Bangladesh, is Solar Power. Solar Photovoltaic Systems are gradually gaining larger share in the global energy generation scenario. Despite the spread of PV solar, comparatively less efficiency, power loss due to mismatch and aging of PV modules lead to reduced dependability and acceptability of the PV solar implementation.

Several faculty members are actively involved in research focusing on reducing mismatch power loss and aging in PV arrays by employing medium and large scale experimentation coupled with advanced application of algorithms. This approach is resulting in unique and novel new solutions to make PV systems more efficient and reliable. This team is also focusing on incorporating Wind and other renewable energy solutions into a hybrid system.

The team involved in this research has several years of experience in this field of study with multiple high-impact publications and several research funds supporting this research.

Application of Machine Learning in Power System Health Monitoring

A country's power system infrastructure consists of highly valuable assets. Conventional power plants and grid system, as well as renewable sources like PV and hydro-electric systems require a lot of maintenance and routine checks to ensure reliable power generation and supply as well as reduced number of system faults. Manual health monitoring is the conventional method that employs a lot of manpower and also posses a lot of risk, not to mention the possibility of human error.

EEE Green faculty members are working towards building a ground-breaking approach to employ the power of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to come up with automated, accurate and efficient health monitoring of power system structures. This will be aided by application of advanced computer vision analysis of optical, thermal and infrared imagery, collected first-hand using drone footage as well as satellite imagery.

Smart Power and Energy Systems

The backbone of a reliable and sustainable power scenario of the nation depends on the power system infrastructure. Smart Grid technologies involve modern connected energy metering, reliable distributed generation system, proper integration of renewable energy sources, implementation of energy storage systems, effective and innovative implementation of energy efficiency measures and some additional state-of-the-art upgrades to the conventional grid system.

EEE Green has an ongoing endeavor to explore the technologies associated with Smart Grids while investigating the required adaptations for implementing Smart Grid in Bangladesh.
